In terms of the Jets, the original moniker wasn't that exciting. Our first owner loved the New York Jets, so named them after them. That being said, when the team returned this year, our new owner, Mark Chipman, knew that the city was desperate that they be the Jets again, although there was some talk of a new team/new name (being as our past franchise does still exist in Phoenix). The nostalgia of the original name won out though - so they made a connection to the Royal Canadian Air Force. Winnipeg (and Manitoba) was instrumental in training Allied pilots of the Commonwealth during World War II with the Commonwealth Air Training plan (one of Russell Crowe's first movies was about it
