It's springtime and I'm in like

After my previous fandom experiences *coughRoswellandJossverse* I think it's fairly safe to say that I'll never truly fall in love with a television show again.  My trust has been too abused for that.  But, much to my surprise, I have found a couple of shows this year that I honestly like. I resisted Battlestar Galactica initially due to the Ron Moore taint (previous fandom experience number 1) and the change of Starbuck's character to a female (I loved the cheesy original show in my youth and Starbuck was my guy lol), but have found it to be entertaining.  Making the Cylons look human is a great twist.  Of course, the fact that I don't 'ship anyone anymore since I got burned in my previous fandoms and thus am not heavily invested in what happens to the characters might also make me more accepting.

My other new "like" this season is Veronica Mars.  Being touted as a Buffyesque show is a mixed blessing if you're one of those survivors of the Jossverse like me who really couldn't stand Buffy by the time the show ended.  I'm happy to say that Veronica is no Buffy.  She's much less self-pitying and way more mature.  The show itself is clever, engaging, and the acting is quite good.  Plus, so far at least, Rob Thomas seems to respect his audience which is more than I can say for those other fandoms I mentioned.  I've yet to hear a "I give the audience what they need, not what they want" sort of comment come from him. I'm really looking forward to the dvd release (here's hoping that a date is announced soon) so that I can catch up with the episodes that I missed.

"Cautiously optimistic" is the way I'm approaching VM too, Angela. I am falling more in love with it weekly, and have, in fact, started trolling for fanfic, which is not a good sign. But I totally agree about Rob Thomas quite clearly respecting his audience. He just seems like a great guy - not as full of himself as Joss (that "what they need" comment STILL grates, because, in fact NO, I didn't need a complete lack of resolution to Buffy/Angel, but thanks Joss!), or as moronic as JK.

In fact, I was on RT's website the other day (http://www.slaverats.com/) and was unsurprised to discover that he wrote the teenybopper movie "Drive Me Crazy." It was one Allie and I enjoyed a few years ago, because it was so much smarter than the usual crap that was aimed at teens. I can totally see seeds of Veronica and Logan in the two main characters of that movie. You should check it out.

I'll check it out Kath. Thanks for the recommendation. It sounds like one that J would enjoy as well. She's definitely hit the ABC Family movieish age. Speaking of ABC Family, I got home from taking N to her party a few minutes ago and walked in to find E watching Shiri's movie on the channel. I haven't actually seen it, but he seems to be finding it interesting. lol

Let's keep our fingers crossed that Rob Thomas keeps respecting his audience. I'm trying not to be too majorly spoiled, but it isn't easy. As for fanfic, I've gone trolling as well. There isn't a ton that I've encountered so far, but I have found a few that I've liked. I wonder if shows that haven't disappointed their audience produce less fanfic in general?

That's what I've been discussing with some peopl at TWP. It does seem to be the case, doesn't it?

Excepting the juggernauts like Star Trek and Star Wars, that does seem to be the trend, Angela. Not much point in "fix-it" fic when you don't see anything to fix! ;-)

I keep having this cognitive disconnect every time someone mentions Rob Thomas with respect to Veronica Mars, lol. I think the producer needs to formalise and start calling himself Robert so it doesn't confuse us Matchbox Twenty fans so much...

I have that same problem too, Tas ;) The Rob issue, of course. lol. But they can get away with it since they're in different entertainment industries ;)

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the fandoms Angela :)

Wanted to add...the thing I like about VM fans? I have yet to find a spoiler about who the killer is. Everyone wants to find out on the show. I love it.

I actually read a good fanfic which dealt with that - that Logan was responsible for the drug, by accident. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

You saw one about the killer, huh? I better stay away from the spoiler boards from now on then. I don't want to know. I think I've guessed, but I don't want to know for sure.

Which fic is it Kath? I'd be interested in checking it out.

Plus, we should compare notes after the VM finale to see if our guesses as to the killer are right. Only a few more weeks now. :)

It's actually a sequel, so you have to read this one first:

The sequel is here:

We will definately have to compare notes after...

X-Files still produces a fair amount of fic also, but that's more a less a juggernaut show as well I suppose. It's interesting to think that it's dissatisfaction that frequently leads to creativity.

Kath, I've actually encountered what I think is a spoiler about the killer's identity, but maybe it was simply spec. I am looking forward to the unraveling of the mystery.

I'm afraid that Logan is going to have at least tangentially been involved with Veronica's rape though (the provider of the rohypnol perhaps?). That should angst up the relationship majorly.
