I totally agree with your assessment of the Jack/Sawyer scene. I think one of the reasons that it worked so well was that it was underplayed. That made the emotional resonace stronger and made it feel less overtly manipulative. I thought Sawyer's line about children and dogs was very telling. I think he surprised himself by volunteering such personal information.
