Dragon*Con highlights-The Firefly edition

angela_oI've been thinking that I should do a massive Dragon*Con synopsis post and I may still do that, but in the meantime, here's some of what happened on my trip.
The Firefly/Serenity cast are all wonderful. Adam Baldwin was donating all of his signing and photograph fees to disaster relief and the others were making donations as well. The lines for the Serenity panels were insane. They started around noon for a 4pm panel. I made it into the Saturday and Sunday panels and got quite good seats. 9th row for the Saturday panel and 5th row for the Saturday one. Approximately 3000 people were in the audience for each of them. Some of my favorite highlights from the panel discussions I attended.
Between Morena Baccarin and Adam Baldwin.
"Adam do you have a crush on me?"
"No, Jayne has a crush on Inara. It's called transference."
When asked what they thought about their characters that no one else knew you got the following.
Jewel-"I think Kaylee smokes a lot of weed."
Adam deadpanned Jayne's "a gourmet cook and does needlepoint".
Morena-She thinks that Inara might have a child somewhere.
Cast comments on Joss.
I think Jewel said that he will say things like "that was great and let's do it again without you sucking". Morena added "let's try acting". Apparently Joss is short with the praise, but they all seem to love him.
When asked how casting differed from their mental images of the characters, Adam at first misunderstood the question. Morena and Jewel explained the question to him and he immediately responded, the "woman playing Inara was hotter." It was very funny. Morena was a late addition to the cast and initially thought that Adam was playing Mal and Nathan was playing Jayne.
They all loved the language of the scripts. Some of their favorite lines were:
Adam did "I'll be in my bunk" and also loved Jubal Early's "life's nothing without work".
Ron loved the "faith fixes you" line from his scene with River/Summer Glau.
Jewel liked Simon's "I'm trying to think of a way you could be cruder..."
While listening to the others, Morena said "We're in a really good show." "Hearing these lines, this is cool stuff."
Also, Morena (and Adam and Jewel) all know why Inara left the Guild House. From the animation with which they all responded to the question you can tell that it's *really* good. She said it's always in the background of her mind in every scene she plays and she promised to tell it someday if Joss doesn't plan to reveal it some other format.
When asked what they took home with them when the show ended, Jewel said, "Tell them what you stole Adam. I know you stole some shit."
Apparently Adam took the head of the Jaynestown statue. They needed it later for some pickup shots so he said if you look closely you can see a line on the neck and that's because of him. He also took his boots because "they're comfortable and they smell like my feet." He'd said earlier that he'd asked to go out and buy good boots after they'd filmed the pilot and additional episodes were ordered.
Jewel took the Kaylee's room sign, her hammock and her waterbra. Morena said teasingly "yeah, you need it", but said she took hers as well. They both highly recommended them. Morena also took all her tea things from her shuttle and the props guy gave her the Chinese bowl she was carrying in one episode. Ron took the Bible that River tore up and 2 pairs of socks. The socks had come up earlier when they were asked about their costuming. Apparently Nathan kept "oodles and oodles and oodles" of things. Adam said that Nathan has a "shrine". In fact, the word was used more than once and they all laughed about it.
When asked who was most like their characters the immediate response was Nathan, followed by Alan/Wash. Ron Glass said that he saw Nathan outside a dentist in Beverly Hills recently and automatically said "Hi Cap'n." They said Nathan likes being called the Captain. Jewel said that they still find themselves doing what he wants. She said he would call and say "Pool party at my house at 5" and she'd say "okay, I'll cancel my plans".
When Hunter, the cute little boy that Adam brought up on stage, asked who was the smartest, Adam asked "smartest actor or character?" Hunter said character. Adam immediately sat back in his chair and said "definitely not me". Morena thought that "Book and Inara would have to fight it out" and Ron agreed because they were "the two who could read". Jewel said "I'm smart technically. I've even heard the word genius." To which Morena replied, "From Simon? He'll say anything to get in your pants." The teasing and give and take were very much a recurrent theme and you could see hom much they all enjoyed taking part in it. Jewel even said how much she loved them. It was very sweet.
It was a lot of fun. You could see how much they valued one another and they were extremely gracious in thanking the fans for all the support they've shown the show.
Don't forget, Serenity opens on September 30. If they make 80 million worldwide, they should get financing for a sequel.

Date: 2005-09-08 10:07 am (UTC)Bwah! I think I will incorporate that sentence into my daily life. Sounds like the panel was very entertaining. I'm jealous! That's hilarious that Adam took Jayne's head. Hee! Was Nathan not there? It sounds like they all have fun together. It's amazing how much loyalty Joss inspires in his casts considering his demands on them. I guess it's because he creates characters that they obviously love. Very cool. I can't wait for Serenity to come out and from what I've heard so far, it's going to be incredible. I hope it does well in the theaters.
