More holiday blather

Today my house smells like a combination of snickerdoodles and mulled cider with a little Fraser fir thrown in for good measure. This does not suck. :)

Why is it that you can say that you're done with all your Christmas shopping and yet you can still succumb to buying more if the opportunity presents itself? I went to Target last night. My first mistake. lol Ostensibly I was there to buy some odds and ends like whole cranberries and yet I manage to walk out with about $150 worth of miscellaneous stuff including more presents for the kids. I admit I couldn't resist cute pajamas for all of them. Our family tradition is that you can open one gift on Christmas Eve and it's often new pjs. I hadn't done that this year and the siren call of tradition was too strong for me. Plus my husband really needs a copy of Serenity. ;)

Of course the house still isn't clean, but I'm choosing to ignore that for now. As long as it's reasonably tidy before our guests arrive for dinner on Christmas Day, it's all good.

Now, my question for you all is what will you be eating for Christmas dinner? Here's what I'll be serving.

Ham
Homemade macaroni and cheese
Sweet potato casserole
Deviled eggs
Peas
Ambrosia
Cranberry Relish
Yeast Rolls

with assorted Christmas cookies, lemon bars, fudge, and a Yule Log (supposedly covered in chocolate ganache and decorated with meringue mushrooms and marzipan ivy) for dessert

My Christmas eating will consist of the following:

Brunch - Christmas morning wifesaver, Orange Blossoms, and fresh-baked croissants

Dinner - Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, rolls, salad, and likely Christmas pudding for desert.

This is excluding all the chocolate covered cherries I will eat over the course of the day, due to having received a box in my stocking. ;)

Color me curious. What is Christmas morning wifesaver and what are Orange Blossoms?

Your days sounds like it will be very tasty. :)

If Kath's Christmas morning wifesaver is the same as my family's, it's basically a breakfast-food casserole, lol. Eggs, ham and/or bacon, bread all baked together (sometimes with tomato slices). :)

Ah, thank you for clearing that up. I'm actually going to be trying something similar but it's just called a breakfast casserole. Although in my case it's going to have sausage as the meat and there are no tomatoes, but otherwise the same basic idea. I got the recipe from a friend who swears by it and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it turns out well.

Well, we're supposed to be having roast pork this year, but that will depend on whatever my mom ends up buying tomorrow LOL b/c she hasn't been able to find anything this week that she likes the look of. We are both allergic to turkey so we generally eat something else. Other than that, whipped potatoes, carrots, probably cauliflower or broccoli in cheese sauce (my favourite). I think I requested cheesecake or something for dessert; none of us are big dessert eaters though. Breakfast will be the unassembled version of the morning wifesaver, LOL.

Oh, and we will have specialty coffee in the morning, usually with Bailey's and whipped cream, while we open presents. :)

My mom's making a pork tenderloin, but I shan't be there to sample it. Interesting that your family really aren't dessert eaters. Does that mean that you forego holiday baking as a general rule or do you just make it and then give it away?

Make it and give it away, lol. My mom adores baking - remember the random bored cookies? But I don't eat much of that stuff, even more so now than as a kid, so she makes it for other people. And I haven't done it for a few years, but I make kickass shortbread cookies!

Ah, yes. I do remember the bored baking. :) The shortbread cookies sound divine. There's something about shortbread. So few ingredients, such a delicious outcome. Mmmmm.
