The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History by John M. Barry

I'm not familiar with this book. I'm trying to figure out how anything could be deadlier than bubonic plague wiping out one-half to one-third of the planet in the 1300s. Do they mean cumulatively?
