I think that you'd like Meg Cabot. The Princess Diaries are better than the movies would make you believe. I also highly recommend Megan McCafferty and her series (Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings. The third will be out in April.)
I agree with you about YA. It's allows for less pigeonholing of genre and it sometimes deals with surprisingly weighty issues.
