I finally had a chance to do that holiday meme that was making the rounds recently.

1.Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Wrapping paper. Complete with real ribbons tied on. Although I will use gift bags if I think they’re really cute.

2. Real tree or artificial?
Real all the way. We’ve had a Frasier fir for the last 20 years. I love the way that evergreen trees smell at the holidays.

3. When do you put up the tree?
The first weekend of December. We’re all about Christmas all month long here.

4. When do you take the tree down?
After New Year's.

5. Do you like eggnog?
It’s okay for a few sips, but not really beyond that.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?
A doll I got when I was about 4.

7. Do you have a nativity scene?
I have two. One painted wooden one that I’ve had since we first got married and a silverplated one that I bought a couple of years ago.

8. Hardest person to buy for?
G’s dad. It’s hard to buy for someone who can buy anything that they want at any time.

9. Easiest person to buy for?
Hmmm. I’d have to say that N is probably the easiest. Kids get harder at they get older, but she’s a breeze.

10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
I’ve had some fairly ugly clothes come my way in years past, but generally I like the vast majority of my presents.

11. Mail or email Christmas cards?
Real, tangible mailed cards.

12. Favorite Christmas movie?
I’m going to cheat on this one. Favorite claymation Christmas special is The Year Without A Santa Claus. As for films, I’m a sucker for It’s A Wonderful Life. Our family tradition is to watch A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
I have been known to pick up a random gift as early as August or September, but the bulk of it gets done in October and November.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
Yes. Particularly if it’s a duplicate of something I already own like a cd or dvd.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas Dinner?
I like all of it, but I’m particularly fond of the ham, sweet potato casserole, and the rolls. Mmmmm carbs!

16. Clear lights or colored on the tree?
Colored. Specifically GE Classic string-a-long lights. They get harder to find every year so I try to pick up a couple of extra sets when I find them.

17. Favorite Christmas song?
Either “Once in Royal David’s City” or “The Coventry Carol”.

18. Travel for Christmas or stay home?
I've done both, but I prefer to be home especially since the kids have come. It’s very hard to play Santa away from home. If I do have to travel, I like to be with my family since our family tradition is to make a very big deal out of Christmas.

19. Can you name all of Santa's' reindeer?
You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen. Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen. But do you recall, the most famous reindeer of all?....Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”

20. Angel on the treetop or a star?
An angel with a china face and hands that I dearly love.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
We let the children open one small present each on Christmas Eve and everything else is opened on Christmas morning.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
I don’t like it when the Christmas decorations go up before Halloween.

23. What do you love most about Christmas?
The sense of anticipation, the beautiful lights and decorations, the good food, watching the faces of the children as they open their gifts, and the music.

24. What do you want for Christmas?
Nothing in particular. As I get older it gets harder to come up with a wish list for myself since the things that I want are generally big ticket items that you can’t really ask for anyone else to get you.

Thanks to Kath and Jana for the cards. They're hanging around the window in my dining room.

I'm always in the market for new recipes at this time of year. So, please share with me some of your favorite Christmas recipes. They can be for anything, but if you have a sugar cookie recipe that you particularly love, I'd love to have it. I haven't been hugely impressed with any of the ones that I've tried in the past couple of years. In return, I give you our favorite cookie recipe. They go by a variety of names (Russian Tea Cakes for instance), but in our house they've always been called Mexican Wedding Cookies for whatever reason.

1/4 cup sugar
1 cup butter (2 sticks softened to room temperature)
2 1/2 cup sifted flour
2 cups chopped pecans
2 teaspoons vanilla

Combine ingredients and roll into small balls. Bake in a 275 degree oven for about one hour until lightly browned. Cool until you can handle them and then roll in powdered sugar. Enjoy!
