Concert wrap up

So, last night was the Franz Ferdinand/Death Cab for Cutie concert and it was a blast. Anne, you told me that Franz was good live and I'm now a believer. In fact, I think Franz is much better live than they are on cd. In contrast, while I love Death Cab, I think you need to listen to their cds to fully appreciate their music because the lyrics are so crucial. Big arenas with sometimes muddy acoustics aren't necessarily the best showcase for them. That being said, I still had a great time.
Here are the set lists as best as I can recreate them. Although the helpful Duke senior sitting next to me didn't know the first two Franz songs either.
Unknown first two songs
Do You Want To
Dark of the Matinee
A new song that they wrote while in Australia and had only performed live twice before
Take Me Out
40'
Walk Away
Eleanor Put Your Boots On
Darts of Pleasure
Michael
Jacqueline
Another I didn't know
This Fire
The lead singer of Franz was very charismatic and I thought that they did a very good job mixing up songs from both of the albums. I was very pleasantly surprised.
The opening act, The Cribs, was most notable for the antics of the drummer. I'd never actually seen anyone stand on their drum set while playing before other than Animal on the Muppet Show. It was very amusing.
The New Year
Why You'd Want to Live Here
Title and Registration
Soul Meets Body
A Movie Script Ending
Photobooth
Different Names for the Same Thing
2 songs from We've Got the Fact that I'm not absolutely sure about but that I thought were For What Reason and Lowell, MA
Crooked Teeth
What Sarah Said
We Looked Like Giants (extended version with dueling drum kits)
The Sound of Settling
For the encore Ben played I'll Follow You Into the Dark acoustically
and then, the rest of the band came out and they played Transatlanticism. Since this is the song that I had the venue doors shut in my face for at the show last October, I was thrilled. It was worth the price of the tickets just for that.
Now, for the funny moments.
I struck up a conversation with the guy seated next to me. Turns out that he's a Duke senior and primarily a Franz fan. He got a call during the intermission between The Cribs and Franz and it was from his mother. He was shaking his head as she'd apparently asked him where he was and when he said "at a concert" she then asked "is it country". I asked how old she was and he said 42. I then proceeded to tell him that I was two years younger than his mother. I'm sure he'll love recounting that to his friends. Plus, two of E's classmates were seated six rows in front of me. Yes, music has charms to breach the age barrier. ;)

Date: 2006-04-08 09:10 pm (UTC)And I'm THRILLED that you enjoyed Franz too!! So thrilled. You're absolutely right - they're better live than on their albums. Actually, that was how it went for me too. I'd had their first album for a month before I saw them in concert, and I just listened to it on occasion, not often - until I saw them live. And after that my love for them just exploded. And it was the same with the 2nd CD. I had it, was pretty much unimpressed with it, and then once I saw those songs live, I really began to appreciate the album.
And I agree - Death Cab is probably the opposite. I'm completely in love with Plans and Transatlanticism - the latter of which is still new enough for me that I'm still catching things that I hadn't picked up on within the songs. I'm very eager to go out and get my hands on the Photo Album!
SO glad you had a great show!! It makes me happy to hear!
