G and I went to see Children of Men last night and it was very, very good. I don't know if I've ever seen Clive Owen in anything else (which might have to be rectified), but he does "world weary, disillusioned, but ultimately good man" perfectly. Michael Caine is also wonderful in the film.

There's something oddly hypnotic about scenarios of dystopian societies and this particular vision of one possible near future was vivid, frightening, and plausibly connected to the present. Plus, there are some amazing long tracking shots. I recommend it.

As an aside, I think Alfonso Cuaron has a very bright future ahead of him. Supposedly he's interested in directing the last HP movie. Since his directorial outing is by far the best done so far, I hope that pairing comes to pass.

If you like Clive Owen, I highly recommend you rent Closer, though definitely watch when the kids are gone/in bed/out of reach. He's also in Gosford Park, though that's a huge ensemble cast and there's a bit less of him because of that.

Thanks for the recommendation. I seem to remember that people either loved that one or hated it when it came out. There seemed to be very little middle ground. I tried to watch Gosford Park but got bored with it early on and stopped watching. Perhaps I should give it another try. I don't think the sound quality was that great in the dvd I was watching either. It was hard to catch all the dialogue.

Good to know that you liked it. I haven't bothered going to the movies for a while but I really want to see that one.

I'm not a huge moviegoer either, much to my husband's chagrin, but this one was worth it. Casino Royale was also very good. That's the other thing that I've seen in the past month.

I just realized recently that Clive Owen had a bit part in The Bourne Identity, which. . .mmmmm, Matt Damon. He was also in a movie with Angelina Jolie, which I cannot remember the name of, but rated extremely high on the angst scale and should only be watched if you just need to freaking get the PMS over with and CRY already. He was pretty damn hot in it. Wasn't he also in that stupid King Arthur movie? I'm trying to block that from my memory, so I'm not entirely sure.

I can't remember him in the The Bourne Identity. Unless he was the other agent that Damon fought and killed in Germany?? I'm told he was Arthur in King Arthur for what that's worth. Beyond Borders is the one with Angelina. I've been looking at Columbia House and considering making some purchases in the Owen oeuvre. Having a guaranteed weeper on had can be good for your emotional health. In semi-shameful admission time, I used to reread Love Story in college every time I needed a good cry.
