With the VM season finale bearing down upon me, my thoughts have been just a tad consumed with the show and I started to consider the names used therein. Since very little seems to be left to chance on VM and I geekily enjoy names and their meanings and/or associations, I thought it would be fun to look a little more closely at some of the names used on the show to see what we can derive from them. Expect no coherent conclusions.  The following is chock full of random associations and ruminations and no resource materials were harmed in its production..

Jake Kane and Abel Koontz--Do we even need to spell this one out?

Since we're on the biblical...
Lilly--
Matthew 6:28-29 "...consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they toil not, neither do they spin.  And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."
Lilly doesn't exist now but she was decorative and fabulous and she's still inspiring others to all sorts of things.  I doubt she's be much with the toiling if she were still around.

Back to last names.
Mars--
In Roman mythology he was the son of Juno and a magical flower and was originally the god of fertility and vegetation and later became the god of war.  Interesting parallel to Veronica's development from sweet to martial.

Echolls--
No great associations here, but it does strike me that the first four letters do represent a lot of an actor's life.  Echoing the words of others and trying to make them seem real.

Kane--
In addition to the biblical, you've also got the cinematic.  Citizen Kane.  Lilly.  Rosebud.  Dead and sled rhyme. lol

Fennel--
Okay, the pronunciation is all wrong, but traditionally the herb was used to ward off evil spirits at Midsummer and to make things that were unpalatable bearable.  You be the judge as to whether or not that appellation fits.

Now on to first names.
This is the irony section.

Sheriff Lamb--
Not exactly sweet, gamboling, and nonthreatening is he?  Could he be a wolf in sheep's clothing?  Time will tell.

Troy--
Nothing like a classical allusion.  Not a hollow horse in his storyline, but you do get a hollow bull.   Plus, a case of something looking too good to be true and turning out to be treacherous.

Celeste--
Supremely good and sublime?  I'm sorry, that's incorrect, but thanks for playing. lol  Some might argue for the "heavenly body" definition, but I don't see it.

Eli--
This one amuses me for strictly personal reasons as it deals with my alma mater.  We know that Keith has hopes of an Ivy for Veronica and he's specifically mentioned Yale.  We've already got an Eli on the show and I'm suspecting that this isn't quite what Keith has in mind for his daughter.

Weevil--
Nothing like a little bug that manages to destroy an entire economy.  Are the 09ers really Big Cotton?

Duncan--
An allusion to Hamlet.  Will his life continue to be a tragedy?

ETA The other mothers
Lynn and Lianne--
Ah, alliteration. How do I love thee? The names are similar and the roles that they play are similar as well. Both bailed on their families when the going got tough and both have a predilection for the bottle. Amusingly enough, the name Lynn derives from the Welsh word for lake. She didn't quite end up in one, instead opting to be a small fish in a much larger pond.

Coincidence? Probably in most cases, but fun anyway.
